The banjo ukulele is also known as a ukulele banjo, banjolele, banjo uke or uke banjo. The earliest record of these instruments dates back to 1917.

The banjo ukulele became very popular in the roaring 20's, the era known for its jazz, blues, and ragtime music. Its popularity continued through the decades with the big bands and swing era of the 30's, with vaudeville/music halls in the 40’s, included in skiffle and folk bands in the 50s and so on.

Each decade has seen a change, but the banjo ukulele has remained in the music world to this day, over a century on. The Beatles, one of the world’s biggest bands, enjoyed playing the instrument. Today’s generation has seen the banjo ukulele used by major celebrities.

WORLD BANJO UKULELE DAY HISTORY

The origins of world banjo ukulele day lie in the UK where it was initialised by the Banjo Ukulele Society (B.U.S.), the first banjo ukulele group of its kind.

Founded on 19th November 2022, it now has hundreds of members worldwide. The B.U.S. wanted to establish a day, not only to celebrate the instrument, but also to celebrate the coming together of people and countries through the love of an instrument which creates much joy.

World Banjo Ukulele Day is to be celebrated on the anniversary of the founding of B.U.S. each year.
