At Alan Yates Music, we take pride in breathing new life into beloved instruments. One such treasure that crossed our path back in 2020 was this banjo ukulele, worn and weathered from years of love and play. The owner entrusted us with the task of repairing and restoring this cherished instrument, and we embarked on a journey to restore its former glory.

Firstly, we focused on the headstock and veneer. Carefully, we repaired the damage, ensuring that the original veneer was preserved. We took the time to alter and re-tool the ferrules and tuning pegs, making them fit properly while still saving the original pegs. The attention then turned to the headstock and neck, which were refinished with a delicate French polish, lending a renewed vibrancy to the instrument's appearance.
Moving on to the fretboard, which was cleaned and treated it, ensuring its longevity for many more years of play. The frets were polished to perfection, allowing for smooth navigation along the instrument's neck. We cleaned and polished all the metal work, restoring it to its original gleaming state.
The resonator, a vital part of the banjo ukulele, required special attention. We stripped away the years of wear, tare and grime, revealing the true beauty beneath. Through careful restoration efforts, we were able to revive its lustre, ensuring that it would shine once again on stage or in the comfort of a player's home.
Another aspect of this restoration was the original purfling. We delicately removed it, cleaned and sealed it back onto the body. This process allowed us to preserve the authenticity of the instrument, honouring its history while breathing new life into its every facet.
Finally, we addressed the instrument's playability. The action was reset, ensuring a responsive and comfortable playing experience.
